We thought about calling this region the “not-just-Marfa region” but opted for the Davis Mountains Region instead, given the mountain range as a central geographic feature in the area. Marfa has definitely gotten all the press here, but the other towns in the area are arguably more quaint and interesting.
This region, particularly the area in and around the Davis Mountain range, is higher in elevation that most of the rest of Far West Texas and gets more yearly rainfall. This results in several species of plants and trees unique to the region and a more lush landscape than the surrounding desert area.
The Davis Mountains region is anchored by 4 towns, all about 25 minutes apart, and each with their own unique personality: Marathon, Alpine, Marfa, and Fort Davis.
